Beyond Real Estate: Henry “Hank” Paul’s Mission to Serve Veterans

By BHS Miami

For more than two decades, Henry “Hank” Paul has built his real estate career on a foundation of integrity, service, and trust—values shaped long before he entered the industry. A combat veteran, former international credit manager, and longtime Pinecrest resident, Hank brings a rare combination of financial expertise, local market knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. In this Q&A, he reflects on the experiences that have defined his career, his dedication to supporting fellow veterans, and why putting people first remains at the heart of everything he does.

A Legacy of Service & Community

You’ve been a Pinecrest resident for over 26 years and a dedicated advocate for the VA community. How has your experience as a combat veteran shaped your core values as a trusted advisor in South Florida real estate?

My core values were molded early on by my parents on a New England farm.  My father emphasized the importance of honesty, ethics, and trust, which were further instilled during my time in the military as a non-commissioned officer responsible for my team and our working dogs in combat. These values further guided my decisions in real estate, prioritizing fairness and truthfulness in my interactions with clients and customers.

From Wall Street to Main Street

Before real estate, you built a career in international trade finance working with major institutions and Fortune 500 companies. How does that deep financial background give your clients an edge, whether they’re navigating conventional sales or commercial investments?

As an international credit manager, I traveled extensively in South America to evaluate the credit worthiness of prospective clients. I believed that evaluations should not be solely based on financial reporting but also on face-to-face meetings to establish trust. I emphasized the importance of trust in business relationships and the need to be flexible in adapting to changing economic and environmental circumstances. In terms of commercial investments, my strengths lie in dissecting financials and identifying weaknesses as well as the essential understanding of outside factors help to support investment objectives and mitigate risk.

Mastering the Local Market

With 22 years in South Florida real estate, you’ve seen every market cycle and handled everything from residential sales to short sales and property management. What is the most important piece of advice you give clients looking to make a move in Pinecrest or the surrounding areas today?

It is important that I provide guidance to clients based on their motivations and my transparency, rather than the influence of compensation. As someone who personally experienced financial devastation during the real estate recession, I continue to maintain a conservative approach and emphasizing the importance of fully disclosing all financial implications to homebuyers. It is crucial for me to ensure that buyers do not overpay for homeownership, as this could lead to unnecessary financial burden and potentially impact their long-term happiness.

Paws with a Purpose

Your journey with dogs has evolved from training combat dogs in the military to now training emotional and service animals for fellow veterans. What has that transformation meant to you personally, and how do these dogs change lives for the VA community?

As someone who has personally experienced the deep bond between military working dogs and their handlers, I understand the profound impact that these canine companions can have on veterans who have faced the traumas of war. The relationship between a dog and their handler goes beyond mere words and gestures – it is a connection built on trust, loyalty, and unconditional love.

The toll that combat takes on our young men and women is devastating, and the staggering rate of suicide among veterans is a stark reminder of the invisible wounds that they carry. It is a harsh reality that we lose approximately 22 veterans a day to suicide, a heartbreaking statistic that underscores the urgent need for effective interventions.

Through my own experiences and observations, I have seen how service dogs can be a lifeline for veterans struggling with PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. These extraordinary animals have a remarkable ability to sense and alleviate triggers of anxiety, anger, and depression, providing a source of comfort and stability for those who have endured the horrors of war.

I am deeply committed to supporting my fellow brothers and sisters in arms by facilitating their access to service dogs. I firmly believe that these animals can make a significant difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much for our country. By contributing in any way that I can to help improve the well-being of veterans through the power of these incredible animals, I am fulfilling my mission to give back to those who have served.

A Lifetime of Giving Back

As an active member of the VFW and American Legion, supporting fellow veterans is clearly a cornerstone of your life. What drives your ongoing passion for the VA community, and how can neighbors and colleagues best support our local vets?

The wounds inflicted by the distrust and disdain towards Vietnam veterans have slowly healed over time. Today, there is a growing recognition and appreciation for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women. As a member of this special brotherhood, we do not seek accolades or praise, but rather a simple acknowledgment of our service. The veterans’ organizations we are part of, such as the VFW and American Legion, serve as a way for us to continue to give back to our community and uphold our commitment to our country. We do not ask for much, just a bit of respect and understanding. As we carry out our duties, we do so with humility and a desire to make a positive impact on those around us.
